Selection Process

Note: Junior Baseball will follow the same all-star process as listed here.

"Little League would gain in public esteem if all tournament teams were selected by the players themselves. Players relish the challenge of competition, but their anxiety to excel is in balance with an intuitive respect and admiration for teammate and opponent alike who demonstrate superior ability and skill." –Taken from Little League International Rule Book and presented to the International Congress as a guideline, taken from the experience of the International Advisory Council. Adhering to these guidelines would eliminate many of the complaints, abuses, pressures and charges of favoritism which are directed toward the league president and/or the board of directors in any given league.

All-Star Player Selection Process

Every player will receive a form asking if they would like to be considered for all-stars and for which team(s). Parents and players are required to sign the form to his/her coach per the schedule outlined below. All form should be returned indicating whether or not the player would like to be considered. This step applies to all all-star teams. Each all-star team will consist of 12- 14 players. Every player/parent will receive an email from the league president asking if they would like to be considered for all-stars and for which team(s). Players/parents are asked to respond no later than May 24th. All players wishing to be considered for a team are put on an all-star ballot. The following people will be eligible to vote for all-star players using an all-star ballot:

  • Players
  • Majors Coaches (Max 2 per team)
  • Volunteer Umpires (as applicable/appropriate)
  • (AAA Coaches rank the AAA players seeking to make an all-star team)

Every player in the Majors votes for his/her choices for the 11-12 and 10-11 all-star teams. Each player is asked to circle 10 names. He/she can vote for himself/herself and up to 5 kids on his/her team. All coaches and volunteer umpires will vote using the same all-star ballot.

Once the deadline has passed for submission of the ballots, the all star teams will be selected using the following process:

  • The league VPs will tabulate the votes.
  • The top six (6) vote getters from the players ballots automatically make the team.
  • If there is a 2-way tie for the sixth spot, both players will be added.
  • If there is a 3-way tie for the sixth spot, all 3 players will be added.
  • The Majors VP, the all-star team head coach, and the Majors head coaches will select the remaining roster spots for the 11-12 team, with the 13th/14th player being alternates.
  • The Majors and AAA VPs, the all-star team head coach, and the Majors and AAA head coaches will select the remaining roster spots for the 10-11 team, with the 13th/14th player being alternates.
  • The Majors and AAA VPs, the all-star team head coach, and the Majors and AAA head coaches will select all the roster spots for the 9-10 team, with the 13th/14th player being alternates.

All-Star Coach Selection Process

Being selected as an all-star little league coach is a tremendous honor. With it comes a great deal of responsibility. Falmouth Little League expects everyone involved with all-star games (coaches, kids and parents/fans) to be a positive representation of our league. They should all be familiar with our league mission statement and coach expectations (readily available on our website). The kids that play all-star baseball deserve a coach who is organized, informed and committed to creating an enjoyable, positive environment where the kids can learn the game, compete and learn how to win and lose gracefully. While winning can be one of the goals of an all-star team, maintaining priorities of having fun, doing their best and being a good sport is essential. Winning a tournament is a great accomplishment. However, that trophy is a souvenir of a given time when your team was the best at something, whereas, a sportsmanship award is something that speaks to the character of the players on the team. Character is something that will be carried with these kids beyond the white lines of the playing field and will help them in life.

Every coach is asked if he/she wishes to be considered for the position of all-star coach (head coach, assistant coach or, either) at any level/age group. He/she needs to submit a request to the VPs of the league and the league President by May 17th clearly stating which team he/she wishes to coach (i.e. 9-10 year-old team) together with his/her relevant experience.

The Majors and AAA VPs and the League President then meet to discuss the list of potential coaches. These three pick the head coach based on the coach's experience, feedback from parents and from other coaches etc. The Head Coach then selects the assistant coach(es). All coaches must have been a head coach or an assistant coach during the regular season.
